Generating Small Business Ideas – Start Here to Create More Income

Having a hard time generating small business ideas? Some people have no doubt about what it is they want to do. Some know they want to do something, but aren’t quite sure what it is. Either way, it is beneficial to take stock of your personal interests, wants, needs and skills when assessing your business. Further, you must consider, through research, how to make your ideas profitable. Even if you already have an idea, considering these items may open your eyes to avenues of income you hadn’t previously considered.

If you decide later that your original idea isn’t economically or structurally viable, you can use the information from your answers to the questions below to move yourself into a different, more profitable direction.

Consider:

Do you want to work at home, or have an office or store?

Are you interested in working with children or animals?

Do you mind working nights or weekends?

Would you like having a business with inventory?

    Do you have sales skills?

How do you feel about working with food?

Do you have computer skills, and what are they?

What skills do you already have that are transferable (i.e., speaking, book keeping)?

Are you interested in operating on a local or national level?

Once you have answered these questions, you have several options. If you already have a business idea, look at it and see whether it is compatible with your answers to the questions asked above-and if not, are you willing to compromise, or can your idea be changed to accommodate it?

Alternately, if you are still looking around for an idea, having the answers to your questions will help you narrow the field to find the right fit.

Other ways to generate ideas are to look at what’s already out there. Aside from your local businesses, check out business sites such as entrepreneur.com. You don't necessarily have to reinvent the wheel. For the largest percent of those looking to start a business, very few will create an entirely new product or service. Most businesses are variations on a theme. Examples: McDonalds and Burger King. Visa and MasterCard. Google and Yahoo. You get the drift.

The point is, you can start a business based on a previous concept—you just need to decide how you will make yourself different and profitable.

One more way to generate small business ideas is to do keyword research. There are several keyword research programs, but one of the easiest to use is the Google Keyword Tool. Type in the keywords of the business ideas that interest you, one per line, and see what comes up. Doing this will help you realize what customers are looking for and what is more profitable, so you can create a niche that will improve your bottom line.

Ultimately, which small business idea you decide on is something you need to be able to commit to. Know what your strengths and weaknesses are, your interests, and what angle you will use to approach the business in order to provide unique and/or valuable service to your customers. Doing these things will make your business more lucrative—and pleasurable!
