Business Affiliate Programs
—choose wisely

Are you considering business affiliate programs to help bring in multiple income streams? Affiliate programs are an excellent way to introduce compatible products or services to your website. If you choose your programs wisely, and provide quality, relevant content on your website, you will be earning more income.

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a business affiliate program is the quality of the affiliate product or service. Remember: your name, or your businesses’ name, is being attached to the product or service when you promote it. If it is just a “get-rich-quick” type of program that does not provide real value to your online (and offline) customers, you are risking your reputation.

Another consideration is the price for the customer. The product may have value, but if it is priced too high, the purchaser will be dissatisfied with the purchase…once again, putting your name and reputation at risk.

In order to get the maximum “conversion” (or selling) rates, you also need to know your audience. Why are they at your website, or why are the listening to you offline? Why would they want this? In the online context, a visitor lands on your page because they are interested in the content of your site. For example, if you sell clothing on your site, the visitor came because they are interested in clothing. If you start selling or promoting, say, database software, the likelihood that your visitor is interested in that is quite slim. So…you probably wouldn’t want to try to affiliate with a database software program (unless you have a really, really interesting clothing market audience!).

On the other hand, maybe your clothing site is a niche that caters to people visiting the tropics. You think that adding some books about Hawaii vacations, or the Virgin Islands, would be helpful or interesting to your customers. Now you have a potential additional income stream that provides value to customers that are already interested (or pre-sold) on the concept of vacation travel to the tropics.

Naturally, you also want to make sure the product you are promoting is complementary—not competitive—with your product or service. If you are in the business of selling children’s educational toys, you don’t want to find a competitors site to affiliate with. So it pays to choose wisely. You need to walk the fine line of providing more value to your customers without losing them altogether.

Finally, make sure you fully understand the income split that your will receive from the business affiliate programs product/service, and make sure it is worth your while to promote it. There are some products that may be so valuable to your customers that you feel you would be selling them—and yourself—short by not promoting them. With those, you aren’t as concerned with making small dollar amounts, because they could enhance your reputation as a person knowledgeable in your field about the resources that are available about a given subject. Generally, however, you don’t want to be putting things up or wasting your valuable time with programs that pay you very small amounts. Find something else!

How can you find out what programs are the best for you? Do your research online, but don’t believe the hype. Sometimes the best ways to find reputable programs are through blogs, or forums. For example, Site Build It!, a comprehensive website provider and online marketing company, has a thriving forum for entrepreneurs to discuss the pros and cons of affiliate programs—and the people there are business owners, stay-at-home moms, retirees and everything in between.

There practically every businesses could not do with some form of business affiliate program to enhance their own business, provide more value to customers, and create multiple income streams. The goal is to choose wisely—and profit well!
